Welcome Guest Author, Robin Danner (aka, Christy Gissendaner)

Good Morning and Welcome Robin!

If it's OK, I will just jump right in with my questions.  I want to know all about your Princes series of novels.

How many Princes novels have you written so far and are there more still to come?

Thanks for having me, Marie! I've published three Princes so far, but I just finished the fourth and submitted it to my publisher. I have plans for a fifth, and final, book in the spring.

Do any or all of the Princes books have recurring characters in them?  (I see Prince Talin is in at least two of them.)

Yes, they do actually. Mathis and Talin are brothers and the first two books deal with their paths to finding love. Several characters pop up throughout the series, most notably Colin (Talin’s chief advisor) and Hugh (his grandson). But Mathis and Talin show up in all of the first three books as well. There is a thread woven throughout each story, so it’s best the first three Princes are read in order.

Can you tell us a little about the Princes series?

Sure!

In The Princes Bound, Mathis wants nothing but peace for his kingdom, while his brother, Prince Talin, seems determined to align his own kingdom with their family’s sworn enemy through an alliance in the form of marriage. Mathis will be damned if he will witness the ceremony binding his brother to the daughter of the man rumored to have murdered their father. Talin’s most trusted captain, Nadia d’Arcy, is ordered to abduct Mathis and bring him by force to Noventia for the wedding, a marriage that is not what it seems to be.

The Princes Determined deals with Mathis’ brother, Talin. After a failed wedding, Rowena of Bevelaire is abandoned by her treacherous father and left to the tender mercies of her intended groom, Prince Talin. A dangerous man with his own agenda, Talin could be Rowena’s damnation or destiny.  To safeguard his people, Prince Talin is determined to do anything, including marry the daughter of his bitter enemy.  But a marriage to Lady Rowena could cost him a kingdom … or his heart.

The Princes Knighted is very dear to my heart as it features Hugh d’Arcy who appears in the first two books as an irrepressible seventeen-year-old recruit. He gets his own story in the third Princes book.  Sir Hugh d’Arcy has returned from the battlefield to escort Sara, the princess of Noventia’s sister, to wed another. The mission is his duty, and his personal agony. Sara has never forgotten her love for the boy Hugh once was. When captured, a shocking revelation brings their love to life again. To save all he has sworn to protect, Hugh faces a devastating decision. Can Sara convince him her love is strong enough to overcome any obstacle?

The fourth Princes will actually be a stand-alone, although characters from the first three novels show up in it as well. I’m very excited about this one as well. It has a female Robin Hood-type character and a very sexy duke!

I know you write under two names:  Robin Danner for Historical and paranormal romance and Christy Gissendaner for romantic comedy and paranormal romance.  Why two different names and how do you decide which of the paranormal romance to do as “Robin” and which to do as “Christy”?

I originally began writing as Christy Gissendaner, which is my maiden name. When I branched off into “hotter” romance, I went with a pen name. It ended up being that contemporaries fit my Christy personal, while my Robin works tended to be historical. I've stayed with those divisions ever sense. All of my contemporaries are now written as Christy, while I write historical as Robin.

I do admit there are times I wonder why I did this! To promote two pen names is double the work at times, but I actually do have a different style for each pen name. Robin’s works tend to be darker and dramatic. Christy’s are lighthearted and fun!

If you could go back in time, what historical period or event would you most love to visit?

Is it wrong of me to say I love my creature comforts, namely flushing water and air conditioning, to really want to go back in time? But I would really love to visit Tudor England and Regency-era England, provided it was only for a day or two.   ; )

Since everyone’s experience is different, can you tell us about your particular road to publication?

I finished my first book in 2001 while I was a senior in college just for fun. My younger cousin loved reading my books, so I wrote several stories purely for her enjoyment.  About two years later, I decided to attempt publishing it. I was contracted by a company in Canada, but due to the owner’s heart problems that dream soon came to an end.

I persevered and while I waited to hear back on my first novel, I actually contracted my second book. By the time it was published, I had several contracts from both Triskelion and Liquid Silver Books. I think I had about twelve published works under my belt by 2006. That was the year I met my husband. We started a family and I quit the writing world to raise my three boys. In May of 2012, I decided my boys were finally old enough for me to return. So in between the day job and hectic family life, I’ve contracted seven works. I currently have two more submitted so I’m a very busy lady!!

Is there an underlying theme or thread that connects your books?

There certainly is in The Princes. The threat of the rebellion and the question of who is the leader is woven throughout the first three books. All is revealed in the third book, which is why I always recommend the first two books are read first. I have recently started a series as Christy Gissendaner, which features the members of an all-paranormal football team.

Where do you get your inspiration for your main characters?

I have to be honest and say my heroines have a lot of me in them! I’m stubborn, somewhat witty, and very strong-willed. No goal is out of reach for me, so when I do something I do it big. So you’ll notice my heroines sometimes take the “alpha” away from the hero. I've been trying to tone my proclivity for strong heroines down, but my female leads just have a mind of their own!

Since I’ve gotten married, several of my husband’s characteristics show up in my heroes. I’m a fan of sweet, funny, boy-next-door types so my heroes often fall into that category. Perhaps a bit too “beta” for romance, but those are the kind I like!

What are your favorite and least favorite parts of writing?

I love the cover reveals! Absolutely adore it! My favorite part by far. But typing “The End” is a close second. I’m very goal orientated so when I ship off another, I pat myself on the back for a job well done. My goal was to publish one book a month, every month, for a year. I've done it so far. October through March has been filled. I’m hoping my current submissions fall into April and May, but I've come to realize my dream is perhaps a bit too unrealistic.

My least favorite (thank God I don’t have to do them with my current publisher) is a synopsis. Writing blurbs are also something I’m not very fond of.

What’s next and where can we keep up with you?

I've just finished the fourth Princes book and it should be coming soon. I have plans for another on the horizon. As Christy, I have two contemporaries coming to Liquid Silver Books in Feb and March. I also have a romcom paranormal due out from Entangled Publishing at some point in the future.

Thanks for having me, Marie!!!

IT'S RELEASE DAY!!!!!!!

Our Cover Is Here!

Friday, January 18, 2013

26 Years In The Making, The Kabrini Messsage is released!

                                                                          - Walt Whitman

One of my favorite movies is called Now Voyager with Bette Davis.  The movie's name is taken from the Walt Whitman short poem, above.  In the context of the movie, Claude Raines (who plays a psychiatrist)  reads this line to Bette Davis' character (his patient, about to be released from his sanitarium) to explain to her that he has done all he can for her and now everything is up to her.  To set forth.  To seek.  To find.

Literally defined, it means all that is desired (but until now not granted) is now there for the taking.

Today is release day!

All that can be done has been done...Now, Voyager, sail thou forth, to seek and find.

Please Meet Guest Author, Barb Han!

Good morning Barb and thank you so much for joining us!
Since your book deals with a missing child and a woman who wakes in a mental institution, I thought we’d explore your lighter side.

Thanks so much for having me here, Marie. I appreciate it! And I do have a lighter side!

Here goes:

What’s your favorite color?

Blue.

If you could live the next 24 hours and then erase it and start over just once, what would you do?

I would sleep in. ha! I got up way too early because I had a lot to do, but finished everything with time to spare.

Have you ever performed for a crowd?

Yes, in second grade. My tumbling team was invited to open for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was such a thrill!

What cartoon character do you identify with?

Spongebob Squarepants. Definitely Spongebob Squarepants. Squidward is a glass half empty kind of guy. I can’t relate to him at all. Patrick is, well, you know, an airhead.

When, if ever, have you experienced love at first sight?

When I met my husband. Only I didn’t know it at the time.

What is the best invention during your lifetime?

Texting. It keeps me in touch with my kids when they’re away.

What bill do you most dislike paying?

All of them. LOL. I don’t think there is such a thing as a good bill.

Now for the serious stuff:

Here’s the blurb for GONE

How far would you go to find a child that never existed?

Elizabeth Walker awakens in a mental institution, the aftermath of a nightmare in her veins. All she can think of is saving a little boy—her son. But the orderlies who rush in and jab her with needles assure her she has no son. So does her mother, who demands her doctors keep her calm and prevent her from these troubling delusions. But Elizabeth’s nightmares are so real, and her arms still feel the memory of holding her son. And her instincts tell her to trust no one. Her child is gone. Her memories are gone. Everything is just…gone.

Ex-military medic David Kerrigan will never stop blaming himself for the childhood tragedy that took his younger sister’s life. As a doctor on staff at the hospital, he’s drawn to Elizabeth, and he’s not sure that everything about her case is on the up and up. David knows full well he can’t change the past, but what if he can save this one person? And maybe helping Elizabeth might just save them both…

Here’s an excerpt from Gone

If memories were liquids, then Elizabeth Walker’s would be blood. Not warm, life-giving, tissue-bathing blood, but cold, coagulated, dried up, and stepped-over-on-the-sidewalk blood.
Memories weren’t liquids.
They were more like fireflies blinking in the dark, daring to be caught, disappearing a moment before they could be reached. And the only liquid left in Elizabeth’s body was a few unshed tears. They hardly ever fell now. Even they seemed to be drying up on her.
Nightmare or not, she would claw her way through any level of consciousness to save the boy. The last ounce of breath she drew from her lungs burst out as a scream, leaving her choking and gasping for air.
The sense of urgency to save him, to do something, burned frustrated holes through the bottoms of her feet—feet that did not touch pavement no matter how fast she moved.
She had to do something. But what?
She calculated the likelihood of reaching him and came up short. He was far. No way could she reach him in time.  Yet waiting, doing nothing, wasn’t an option either. Protective instinct propelled her legs forward, and damn the odds.
“Somebody. Help.” She pushed herself from the dream.
She dug her fingers into her mattress, discharging a crush of bleach into her hyperventilated nostrils. A drowning sensation filled her lungs. She clenched her chest muscles. She gasped, struggling for oxygen.
A door slamming against a wall made her sit bolt upright. Two bulky men in blue scrubs burst into the room.

Last Minute Details!

Just a quick update on the latest publication details.

I did receive the cover art on Friday, but it was a draft and we are requesting some adjustments, so that's why I have not posted it yet.  Once the final version is approved, I will post it immediately!

I also received something called the "second round of edits" on Friday (hadn't realized those were coming!), but they were very minor and they have already been completed and submitted.

Just waiting for the "final galley proof" of the entire novel and then, once that is read through one last time and approved and the final cover art is received, we are ready to go!

Four days to go until release day on Friday!

In researching a poem I've had in mind by Walt Whitman for Friday's  Release Day blog post, I came across another Walt Whitman poem that is also appropriate and thought I'd share it today...

What's next?

On Wednesday we will feature Guest Author, Barb Han.  Barb writes contemporary romance and romance suspense novels and for a preview, you can check out her website right now at:  http://www.barbhan.com/

Be sure to check in on Wednesday, meet Barb and find out about her latest novel, Gone.

Only One Week To Go...Countdown To Blast Off!

We are almost there...

One week from today The Kabrini Message will finally be a published novel.  Written in 1987, it sat in storage for 25 years and was "on the road to publication" for a year and a half (it was a long road!)...but we are almost there - only 7 more days!

I just thought I'd update everyone today as to the latest publication info., so here goes:

The final edits were completed on Wednesday 1/9 and the final galley proof will be submitted from the publisher today or Monday for one last run through.

The cover art is due today!  This will be posted on Facebook as soon as it's received and then on the blog at the next available posting.  If received today or over the weekend it will be on Monday's blog post, but again, it will be on the Facebook page immediately!

The video trailer will be updated to include the cover art and the release date (neither of which we had when the video was first produced).

The press release is complete and a media list is being compiled now by Pamela Dollak, our fabulous P.R. consultant and it will go out to the media on either January 18th or possibly the 19th, depending on how late in the day the book is released on the 18th.

Which brings me to the next point:  As far as I am aware, there is no way to know exactly what time the publisher, Etopia Press, will release the book on the 18th.  Looking at past releases, it seems to usually be about 8:30 AM, but sometimes as late as around noon.  After that, there is no way to know exactly what time Amazon.com and Barnesandnobel.com will each post their "buy  links", which is when the book officially becomes available for  purchase - but it will be sometime on the day of release.  If, prior to publication, I do get any information on a time, I will post it on Facebook, but I may just have to keep checking that day.

Lastly, the back cover "blurb" was finalized yesterday.  Here it is:

An alien race. A shocking message…

During an archaeological dig in Greece, Jeffrey Driscoll stumbles upon a miraculous find: ancient crystals with celestial coordinates that will connect humankind with the Kabrini, a highly advanced alien civilization. His discovery leads him on a quest from the jungles of Africa to the Islands of Greece, from the streets of London to the tombs of Egypt, from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles, Jamaica, and Vienna, and finally to the deepest depths of space and Earth’s first global space effort, the Legacy mission.

When Driscoll Mining and the U.S. Army complete deep space construction of the Kabrini communications network, the Legacy mission is deemed a success. But a dangerous terrorist group hungers for revenge, and Driscoll will stop at nothing to save the project. As his obsession with the Legacy mission spirals out of control, he risks losing everything—his company, his grasp on reality, and the one thing he’s ever truly loved: his wife. And when humankind finally makes contact, they quickly discover the Kabrini Message isn’t exactly what they want to hear.

That's about it for now.  Can't wait to see and share the cover art!

Have a great weekend everyone!  We are so close...let the countdown begin!!!

Guest Author, Laura Diamond

Good Morning Everyone and a big WELCOME to our Guest Author today, Laura Diamond!

Here is a brief Author's Bio on Laura:

Laura Diamond is a board certified psychiatrist and author of all things young adult paranormal, dystopian, horror, and middle grade. Her short story, CITY OF LIGHTS AND STONE, is in the DAY OF DEMONS Anthology by Anachron Press (April 2012). Another short story, BEGGING DEATH, is in the CARNAGE: AFTER THE END Anthology Volume One by Sirens Call Publications. Her Young Adult Paranormal Romance novelette NEW PRIDE and novel SHIFTING PRIDE debuted late 2012 from Etopia Press. She has just signed with Pugalicious Press to publish another Young Adult novel, ZODIAC COLLECTOR, due late 2013/early 2014. When she's not writing, she is working at the hospital, blogging at Author Laura Diamond--Lucid Dreamer (http://lbdiamond.wordpress.com/), and renovating her 225+ year old fixer-upper mansion. She is also full-time staff member for her four cats and a Pembroke corgi named Katie.

And now Laura is going to give us a "crash course" in shape-shifting, much the way the main character from her latest novel (Nickie Leone in Shifting Pride) received.  Please take center stage Laura.

Thank you very much, I will!  Here is what I call:  Shape-Shifters 101:

If Nickie Leone’s dad hadn’t gone missing, she’d have been brought up in the shifter world the right way. She wouldn’t have had to follow a vague string of clues mixed with veiled and not so veiled threats. She wouldn’t have had to get freaked out by the blue-eyed panther that seemed to find her at every turn. She wouldn’t have had a panic attack when whiskers sprouted from her face.

Here’s an excerpt capturing Nickie’s first lesson in the crash course, Shape-shifters 101 (which, by the way, occurred in the library. How apropos.):

I slapped my cell phone shut and left the suffocating room to weave my way through the stacks to Tiffany. Halfway down a row, a shiny trinket caught my eye. I paused for a closer look. On the third shelf down, sixth book over, a small, silver panther’s head rested on the spine of a frayed-edged, cloth-bound text. At first I thought the metalwork floated, impossibly suspended without an anchor. I fingered the gumdrop-sized figure and discovered it was attached to a supple piece of brown leather.

Dragging the book off the shelf, I inspected the title. Half-human, Half-cat: The Life of a Shape-shifter.

The title, gilded in golden lettering, burned into my brain. The sensation of Mentos mixed with soda popped in my gut.
Below the title was a figure of a squatting, fur-covered man. He clutched a clawed hand to his chest, and his tail wrapped around his left flank. Only his face lacked hair, but he did have whiskers and pointed ears. Freaky.

I opened the book, and a piece of paper slipped out, fluttering silently to the floor. I picked it up and unfolded it while holding the book to my chest.

Look familiar?

I crunched the paper in my hand and took a better look at the page.
An exact replica of the wood-burned picture at home stared at me. Half-woman, half-feline in form, she bared her teeth and fangs. Her tail curled into an S behind her. The woman-cat’s rage sparked off the page.

The caption below the picture read: Pyrography from late 1870s depicting a werecat.

Werecat. I flipped the page, searching for a clue. Though, what type of clue eluded me.

My lips moved as I read the text.

Shape-shifting can occur in an unsuspecting individual. It usually starts after puberty or during a time of extreme stress. The transformation itself can be triggered in several ways and is relatively simple.
Early signs of a pending transformation include: fatigue, new cravings, and uncanny coordination. Those prone to accidents will suddenly become graceful.

Eyes, ears, hands, and hair are the first to change once the prodromal period is over. This is usually followed by the growth of whiskers and a tail.

If the victim is not properly inducted into the world of shape-shifters, they will often be confused, frightened, and impulsive. This can lead to extreme violence and death.

I snapped the book shut. If someone was messing with me, they were doing a damn good job. But how’d they know I’d walk down this aisle and see this book? And now of all times? Seriously, I’d wandered all over these rows since I was a little kid. I opened my palm, focusing on the scrap of paper I’d squished. Maybe the message wasn’t meant for me. Pfft. Right. I sighed and carried the book to the table. My hand shook when I set it down.

Tiffany sat up straight. “You look kind of freaked.”

“I need to talk.” I sat next to her, nearly frothing at the opportunity to purge. Yet I hesitated at where to begin. All the cat clues of the past few days were more than significant, sure, but I just couldn’t force myself to seriously consider werecats as...real. That was crazy.

Thank you very much - we learned something new today - always a good thing!  Now please share some info. on Shifting Pride.

I'd love to!  Here is the Blurb for Shifting Pride:

Curiosity brings out the Kitty...

Sixteen-year-old Nickie Leone has proof her father is still alive. His watch arrives in the mail, with a note telling her to “keep it hidden,” and her curiosity is piqued. She obeys the request, even keeping it hidden from her mother. But when an email from her father disappears before her very eyes, she begins to question her own sanity.

And things get even more complicated when she meets Xavian Katz, the blue-eyed, blonde hottie whose contagious smile and ridiculous sense of humor make her want to tell him all her secrets. But there’s a current beneath his charm that she can’t quite read. He’s hiding something.

When Nickie grows pointed ears and whiskers…and then a tail!...Xavian (who always seems to knows the right time to be around) seems unsurprised. He’s a shapeshifter too, a coincidence that Nickie can’t deny or ignore. She needs his help to master her new abilities, because her father’s rival, Derek, wants her to join his tribe. The last thing she wants is to be under his rule, but Derek’s got something to do with her dad’s disappearance—she knows it. And maybe letting herself be captured is the best way to find out…
